Leadership in Virtual Teams

  • Leadership is responsible for setting the tone and atmosphere in terms of behavior, trust and professionalism among VT members.

  • Leaders may also set the shared mental model, by which team members may adopt to develop a sense of unity, values & alignment.

  • Diversity is an intrinsic feature of virtual global teams, taking into account a variety of categories (age, gender, culture, skills, etc.)

  • Leaders overseeing diverse groups should be aware of the composition of their teams, their customs and motivations.

  • When dealing with team conflict, awareness of diversity composition may become part solution relating to latent conflict condition (i.e. "getting to the heart of the matter").
